LETTER: Disturbed by directors' behavior
It is personally disturbing to realize certain directors of our Monarch Fire District have been singled out by the auditors for their alleged mismanagement of the Employees Health Fund. But I find it even more unacceptable these same two directors now choose to use taxpayer dollars to defend their positions. Not only have directors Richard Gans and David Terschluse used the Monarch district Web site for their personal defense message, but during the Dec. 12 board meeting they voted to indemnify themselves from any personal responsibility. While they say they will repay that money if found guilty, one only has to read the indemnification agreement to see it has more loopholes than a piece of Swiss cheese. It is wrong these directors hold their meetings at 5:30 p.m., when few of us can skip work or our family dinners to participate. These meetings should be open and held without such nonsense. The directors need to hear the outrage I and others have toward their behavior. What have these men to fear? Are their actions telling us something? After all, the district provides our directors insurance coverage specifically intended for such situations. Is it possible they know the insurance will not cover personal fraud? Why should taxpayers be held responsible? I have to ask what gives Rich Gans and David Terschluse the right to use our tax dollars for their personal needs. That just reeks of an abuse of privilege and power. I applaud the courageous actions of director Kim Evans who voted against the use of taxpayer dollars for this purpose. At least she listens to the outrage. Michael Andrews Wildwood |
